Cheap flights to Tenerife
Tenerife is the largest, and most popular, Canary Island. It certainly packs a lot in: family holiday resorts, lush mountain scenery, the historic capital of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, spectacular mountain hiking opportunities, water sports and surreal volcanic lava landscapes.
There really is something for everyone. And there’s no reason that you shouldn’t be able to grab a cheap flight to enjoy it all.
Let’s show you how.
When to book cheap flights to Tenerife
The first thing to understand is when the peak seasons are in Tenerife.
The peak seasons in Tenerife fall between December to February and May to October. In the former many older tourists fly to the island at a time when there are few families and children to contend with. During the latter period a mixture of families and young revellers head out for their time in the sun.
Things get particularly busy during February when the carnival – second only to Rio de Janeiro’s – packs in some fun and feasting before Lent. There are also music festivals that are popular in June and July: the Santa Blues festival and the Heineken Jazz Festival respectively.
This means that the cheapest flights can usually be found in March, April and November. And what’s more, during this time the resorts are quieter and less crowded but, with its year-round warm weather, you’ll still be able to have your days in the sun.
How to find the best flight deals to Tenerife
It’s not all about the season, however. You can find cheaper flights all year round if you understand a couple of tricks to use when searching on Expedia.
If you are not set on certain dates you can find cheaper flights by using our ‘Show Flexible Dates’ feature. This appears just above where your flight options are returned – and it lets you see exactly when the cheapest tickets to Tenerife are across a range of dates.
Finally, bear in mind that there are two airports that serve Tenerife – one in the north and one in the south. It’s always worth checking flight prices to both, especially as the island is only 60 miles long.
Here are some of the most popular routes:
- Ryanair
- Thomas Cook Airlines
- easyJet
- Norwegian Air International
- Jet2
- British Airways
- Iberia
- Pop into a guachinche for a lunch to remember. These rough and ready eateries are a local’s secret. If you’ve hired a car you can find them in the middle of banana plantations. They serve up the most delightful home-cooked fare.
- Forget the black sand beaches and head for the white stuff. The snow-capped Pico del Teide is Spain’s tallest mountain. There are fantastic hiking trails here to enjoy panoramic views of the island and beyond.
- Feel the thrill as you drop into a canyon. Get your rappel on as you descend into the canyons of Barranco de Los Arcosin. Stunning landscapes and thrilling experiences combine in a drop you’ll remember for a lifetime.
Airlines offering flights to Tenerife include:
Airports in Tenerife
The majority of the cheap flights will be found landing in Tenerife South (also known as Reina Sofia Airport). Indeed, direct flights are rather thin on the ground for Tenerife North (also known as Los Rodeos), but it is always possible to fly into Spain and enjoy a city break in Barcelona, for example, before flying on to Tenerife.
Most holiday resorts are situated on the south of the island – and it is here that all the budget airlines currently offer flights.
Getting from the airport in Tenerife
The small island is ideal for exploring – and car hire is available from both airports should you wish to get around under your own steam.
For those looking to save there are plentiful local buses serving the airports. From Tenerife South, a bus trip from the airport to Los Cristianos or Playa de las Américas will set you back little more than €3.00. And to travel form the north to the south is only a 45-minute trip that will set you back less than €5.00.
There are also numerous shuttle services and prices on hiring a taxi are remarkably reasonable.
Three Tenerife highlights that you shouldn’t sleep on
Should lazing on the beach or lounging with a sunset cocktail not be all you wish to do on your holiday in Tenerife here are three things that many other visitors will miss: more fool them!
